Die Schlagzeilen damals waren „Piraten im Mittelmeer“ und „Die Erfindung eines Fernglases durch Galileo“. Lesen und Schreiben begannen ihren Siegeszug 1450 mit dem Gutenbergschen Buchdruck, der die Grundlage für eine massenhafte und ökonomische Verbreitung von zunächst vorwiegend religiösen, dann aber auch weltlichen Schriften darstellte. Die Aufklärung, Flugschriften und die Französische Revolution waren Triebfedern, die das Lesen und Schreiben über mehr als drei Jahrhunderte voranbrachte. 1920 waren 100% der männlichen Bevölkerung und ein Teil der weiblichen in den Staaten Europas in der Lage zu Lesen und zu Schreiben. Nur Großbritannien, die Niederlande und Deutschland waren um 1910 bereits bei 100% der Bevölkerung. …
